The Maturity Model

The Ascent

Four stages between "we should do something about AI" and "our business runs on intelligence." Every company is somewhere on this curve. The work isn't skipping ahead — it's climbing on purpose.

The Ascent is a four-stage model — Aware, Adopting, Augmented, and Autonomous — for how a business goes from scattered AI tools to intelligence that's connected, managed, and compounding. It's the path from copilot to autopilot — from tools that help a person work faster to intelligence that simply delivers the outcome. Most companies in 2026 are at Stage 02 (Adopting): tools are in use, but nothing connects the data underneath.

Stage 01

Aware

You know AI matters. Nothing's connected yet.

What this looks like
  • Leadership is reading about AI; a few ChatGPT logins show up on their own.
  • No shared sense of what "doing AI" even means here.
  • Nobody owns it — it floats between IT and "innovation."
The path forward

Find where intelligence would actually move the needle, and pick the first place to build.

Stage 02

Adopting

Tools are in use. Nothing connects them.

What this looks like
  • Copilot, ChatGPT, and point tools live in pockets across teams.
  • A few people are faster. Most of the company works the same as before.
  • Your data still sits in separate systems — sales, finance, support — that don't talk.
  • Every "AI win" is one person's story, not a business result.
The path forward

Stop adding tools. Build the layer that brings your information together — and start managing it.

Stage 03

Augmented

Your information is connected. People get answers. Decisions get better.

What this looks like
  • Sales, finance, and operations data flow through one secure, managed layer.
  • Dashboards become conversations — ask a question, get an answer with context.
  • Every employee has an AI counterpart that knows your business, not just the internet.
  • Decisions are faster, better grounded, and more consistent across the team.
The path forward

Move from answering the questions you ask to surfacing the ones you didn't think to.

Stage 04

Autonomous

The system works ahead of you. The advantage compounds.

What this looks like
  • Routine decisions run on autopilot, inside guardrails you set.
  • The system flags risks and opportunities before anyone notices them.
  • Your intelligence becomes a moat — new hires inherit the company's memory.
  • Every new tool you add makes the whole thing smarter.
The path forward

Now it's about stewardship — keeping it governed, current, and compounding. This is the part we manage for you.

FAQ

Common questions.

What is The Ascent?
The Ascent is a four-stage model — Aware, Adopting, Augmented, and Autonomous — for how companies go from knowing AI matters to running on connected, managed intelligence. It is how Ascent Solutions figures out where you are today and what your next step should be.
How do I know which stage my company is on?
Most companies are at Stage 02 (Adopting): tools like ChatGPT and Copilot are in use, but the data underneath still lives in separate systems with nothing connecting it. A short Assessment pins down your stage and the gaps that matter most.
Can a company skip a stage?
No — skipping makes things fragile. You cannot jump to autonomous agents (Stage 04) without first building the connected layer that makes Stage 03 work. Each stage builds on the one before it.
What changes between Stage 02 (Adopting) and Stage 03 (Augmented)?
That is the big leap. Your sales, finance, and operations data become connected through one secure, managed layer. Dashboards turn into conversations. Every employee gets an AI counterpart trained on your business — not the open internet. Decisions get faster and more consistent across the company.
How long does it take to climb a stage?
Building and standing up the first version usually takes 3–6 months for a mid-market company, depending on how scattered things are. Going from Augmented to Autonomous is a longer road — often 12–24 months — and depends on how much you invest in keeping it managed and governed.
